What is Harris Tweed? A Guide to Scotland's Most Famous Fabric
A fabric with a story worth telling
If you've ever run your fingers across a piece of Harris Tweed, you'll know there's something special about it. It has a warmth, a weight, and a texture that synthetic fabrics simply can't replicate. But what exactly is Harris Tweed — and why does it have its own Act of Parliament?
Here's everything you need to know about one of Scotland's most iconic materials.
What makes it Harris Tweed?
Harris Tweed is a hand-woven woollen cloth produced exclusively by islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The islands of Harris, Lewis, North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist and Barra are the only places in the world where genuine Harris Tweed can be made.
To carry the name 'Harris Tweed', the cloth must meet three strict criteria:
It must be made from pure virgin wool
The wool must be dyed, spun and finished in the Outer Hebrides
It must be hand-woven by islanders at their own homes
These rules are protected by the Harris Tweed Act of 1993 — one of only a handful of fabrics in the world with its own parliamentary protection.

The Orb mark — your guarantee of authenticity
Every piece of genuine Harris Tweed is stamped with the Orb mark by the Harris Tweed Authority, the independent body that inspects and certifies every metre of cloth. When you see the Orb, you know the fabric is the real thing.
At Maccessori, every bag, purse and accessory is made from Harris Tweed certified with the Orb mark. So when you buy from us, you're buying a piece of genuine Scottish heritage.
Why is it so special?
Harris Tweed has been woven in the Outer Hebrides for centuries. The tradition began as a way for crofting families to make warm, hard-wearing clothing from the wool of local sheep. Over time, it gained a reputation across Britain and beyond for its exceptional quality.
Today, the same weaving traditions are kept alive by a small community of weavers — each working at a hand loom in their own home. It's one of the last truly artisan textile industries in the world, and each piece carries with it the skill and heritage of generations of island weavers.
From the loom to your hands
At Maccessori, we take that heritage and bring it into everyday life. Our range of Harris Tweed bags, purses and accessories lets you carry a piece of Scotland with you — whether you're heading to the shops, gifting something truly special, or simply treating yourself.

The perfect gift — and a sustainable one
Harris Tweed is also a genuinely sustainable choice. Made from natural wool by skilled island craftspeople, it's built to last for years. Unlike fast fashion, a Harris Tweed accessory is something people keep, treasure and pass on.
That's why our products make such meaningful gifts — they're not just beautiful, they're made with real care and real craft.
