Harris Tweed is a famous, rugged wool fabric that originated in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland and has been a popular material for clothing, accessories, and upholstery since the late nineteenth century.
The fabric is produced using traditional methods such as hand-weaving and dyeing and can only be done on the Islands of the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, making it an iconic symbol of Scottish culture and heritage.
Harris Tweed is a woven fabric traditionally made from sheep’s wool in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. It is characterized by its unmistakable multi-coloured patterns and its durability, which makes it ideal for so many uses – including our Harris Tweed Collection. Although the production of Harris Tweed has changed significantly over the years, traditional methods are still used to create this iconic textile.
Genuine Harris Tweed can only be produced in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland, where it has been woven on handlooms since the early 1800s. Thus, Harris Tweed is a native product from one of the remotest parts of the British Isles.
Harris Tweed is unique among fabrics due to its production methods. There are six key stages to making the tweed, all of which are described beautifully by the Harris Tweed Authority in this post.
Only virgin wool is used, and it is dyed before being spun. Then, the weaving of the fabric is done on small treadle looms in islander’s homes. This gives each piece its own character, texture, and finish that cannot be duplicated in any other fabric.
Harris Tweed is a fabric like no other – it’s the only fabric that is protected by its own Act of Parliament. Find about more about the History of Harris Tweed here.
Harris Tweed stands apart from other fabrics due to the unique methods used in producing it. Additionally, each piece undergoes rigorous quality control tests before it can bear the iconic Harris Tweed Orb label. This ensures that consumers receive only 100% authentic Harris Tweed when they make their purchase. At Maccessori we only use Genuine Harris Tweed – which you can see from the Harris Tweed label attached to each one of our products.
